Julie Morstad

So, today my boyfriend brought home one of my holds from the library: My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me: Forty New Fairy Tales, a collection of contemporary retellings of fairy tales edited by Kate Bernheimer. The collection features stories by some of my favorite writers (including Sarah Shun-Lien Bynum, Joyce Carol Oats, and Francine Prose), but what really caught my eye was the book's cover: a simple but eerie illustration of a girl's braid emerging from a cauldron accentuated by bold, beautiful, hand-drawn typography. The cover was illustrated and lettered by Julie Morstad, who also happens to be responsible for the beautiful artwork for Neko Case's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood album.

So, without further ado, here's a selection of favorites from Julie's online portfolio.

If you like what you see, Julie sells archival quality prints via a Big Cartel shop.

Thank you so much for posting this, I have long been intrigued by Julie's art after discovering it via Neko Case.
I think I will definitely have to purchase 'My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me: Forty New Fairy Tales'.

Also nice to see posting around here again, it is and has always been one of my favourite communities.

I loved her artwork for Neko, it's one of my favorite illustrated album covers!

I'm about halfway through My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me and it's really fantastic. I'm finding out about so many great new authors!

Thanks so much for your comment. I've missed posting here and am going to try to get back into posting more regularly in the new year!

Aw, I love her! Thanks for posting. :] I have a tattoo of the sparrow girl she did for Neko Case's album a few years ago.

Your tattoo sounds fantastic! The Fox Confessor... album cover was my first exposure to Julie's work, though I didn't know it at the time.

Her art is fantastic! Thanks for posting this. Also, I will most certainly be reserving this book from the library. I was tickled when I saw that FLB has a story in it & realized you hadn't namechecked her.

Hey now! I totally mentioned her when I posted about this on tumblr! I haven't gotten to her story yet (I've read about the first 15), but my expectations are HIGH.

I must've missed the tumblr shout out! Ugh, lately when I think of FLB I remember reading some short story of hers called "Blood Oranges" transcribed onto some fan site in, like, eighth or ninth grade and realizing that she was just recycling crap that she had used in The Hanged Man. I was VERY disappointed! I'm always so tempted to read Psyche in a Dress and her other more recent works, "just because", but my hopes aren't quite so high.

I've read some of her more recent stuff (The Waters and the Wild, published in 2009 is probably the most recent one that I've read), but haven't been able to convince myself to read the three novels that came after that (Pretty Dead, The Frenzy, and House of Dolls.) The Waters and the Wild was just so bad.

Wow thanks for sharing! Love the ghostly, see-thru quality of her work.

Me too, there's something whispy, but a little sinister, too, about her drawings that I love.

Thanks for commenting & I'm glad that you like the artwork!

Love these - a perfect mix of pretty and eerie. The one with the sketches of the vases (in her portfolio) really reminds me of these Jonathan Adler vases.
